Skyrim’s mod scene is legendary but unforgiving. A correct install order and a few stability tools prevent the dreaded "CTD on load".
These are our editor’s practical, reproducible tips — no exploits, no external tools, just better play on a normal PC.
Modding Order & Stability
The essentials for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition.
Install order
1) SKSE → 2) USSEP → 3) SkyUI → 4) engine fixes → 5) mesh/texture mods → 6) gameplay (Ordinator) → 7) patches/merge. Use a mod manager (Vortex/MO2), never drop files by hand.
Stability
Add Engine Fixes, SSE Engine Fixes, and a crash logger (Trainwreck). Keep plugins under 254 (ESL-flag where possible). Sort with LOOT, then hand-tweak known conflicts.
First playthrough
For a stable vanilla+ experience, use USSEP + SkyUI + a weather/lighting mod (Obsidian/ELFX) + a texture pack (Skyland). Save heavy ENB/4K lists for a second, stronger PC.
