Why it happens
The cause determines the fix.
Cause 1
A DirectX or GPU initialisation failure — outdated or corrupted drivers, damaged DirectX components, or the game selecting the wrong GPU.
Cause 2
On laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics, the game defaults to the integrated adapter and cannot initialise its renderer.
Cause 3
On systems with damaged Windows graphics files, the failure sits below the game entirely.
Fixes, in the order that works
Cheapest and most reversible first.
Update the GPU driver with a clean install
Download the latest NVIDIA Game Ready or AMD Adrenalin driver, choose Custom and tick clean installation, then restart. Running a driver from before the current game build is one of the most common launch-crash causes.
Repair the DirectX runtime
Download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Microsoft and run it, even if Windows reports DirectX as current. Legacy components are not always replaced by Windows Update.
Force the high-performance GPU
Settings > System > Display > Graphics, find GTA5.exe and set it to High performance. This is the fix for the majority of dual-GPU laptop cases.
Run a system file check
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, if you suspect damaged Windows graphics files.
Verify game files
GTA V is roughly 100 GB so verification takes 10–20 minutes, but it repairs the same damage a reinstall would.
How to confirm it is fixed
One successful launch is not proof.
Retest properly
Launch from the store client rather than GTA5.exe, twice, after a restart. Also confirm the Rockstar Games Launcher is current and that you are signed into the account that owns the game.
When to ask for a refund instead
Troubleshooting has a deadline.
Know the window
Steam refunds within 14 days of purchase and under 2 hours of playtime, and documented technical faults are sometimes accepted past that. Microsoft Store and Epic follow similar rules with store-specific exception paths.
Evidence changes outcomes
Attach crash logs, a DxDiag and the steps you already tried. A denied refund can sometimes be overturned when you can show the game is genuinely unplayable rather than simply disliked.
Bans are not refundable
