Recognising "Black screen on launch"
The Rockstar Games Launcher reports a successful launch, but the game window never appears — or a black screen shows for thirty seconds or more before returning to the desktop.
Why it happens
The cause determines the fix.
Cause 1
A stuck Rockstar process or a launcher that has lost its cached state, which produces repeated sign-in loops and crashes right after pressing Play.
Cause 2
Overlay injection. Discord, GeForce Experience, the Rockstar overlay, MSI Afterburner and RTSS all inject into the process, and RAGE titles crash on injection more often than most engines.
Cause 3
BattlEye out of sync with Windows after an update, which prevents the game from completing its startup handshake.
Fixes, in the order that works
Cheapest and most reversible first.
End every Rockstar and GTA process
In Task Manager, end GTA5.exe, GTAVLauncher.exe, PlayGTAV.exe, RockstarService.exe, SocialClubHelper.exe and LauncherPatcher.exe under Details, not just Processes. GTA V leaves zombies behind when overlays interrupt its shutdown.
Clear the launcher cache
Go to %LocalAppData%\Rockstar Games\Launcher and delete the contents. Also check Documents\Rockstar Games\Launcher and remove temporary files. Sign in again afterwards.
Disable every overlay
Turn off the Rockstar launcher overlay, Discord overlay, NVIDIA GeForce Experience overlay, MSI Afterburner or RTSS, and any third-party FPS counter. Relaunch and test before re-enabling any of them.
Reinstall BattlEye
Open the game install folder, find the BattlEye subfolder and run the setup tool inside as administrator. This re-registers the anti-cheat service and fixes most "game will not launch" errors after a Windows update.
Reseat the launcher rather than the game
Uninstall Rockstar Games Launcher and Social Club, restart, then reinstall the launcher from Rockstar’s official site. Reinstalling only the launcher is much faster than reinstalling 100 GB of game.
How to confirm it is fixed
One successful launch is not proof.
Retest properly
Launch from the store client, sign in normally, and reach the main menu twice in a row. If the black screen returns only when a specific overlay is enabled, that overlay is the cause — keep it off for this game.
When to ask for a refund instead
Troubleshooting has a deadline.
Know the window
Steam refunds within 14 days of purchase and under 2 hours of playtime, and documented technical faults are sometimes accepted past that. Microsoft Store and Epic follow similar rules with store-specific exception paths.
Evidence changes outcomes
Attach crash logs, a DxDiag and the steps you already tried. A denied refund can sometimes be overturned when you can show the game is genuinely unplayable rather than simply disliked.
Bans are not refundable
If the failure follows an anti-cheat ban or a modified online client, no store will refund it. That is a separate category from a game that will not run.
